The Institute of Chemistry in its present form was re-established in 1990 and covers two different areas of chemistry, construction and building materials and water management. Our staff comprises only 7 academic members and 2 laboratory technicians. We lead basic courses in Building chemistry for bachelor study programme Civil Engineering. In the upper grades we have courses in analytical chemistry, chemistry of building materials, chemistry and technology of water and physical chemistry of silicates that are led in different study programmes and specializations. Teaching represents only half of our activities, and the rest of the time is devoted to the research. It is focused on three different areas, and it aligns with the faculty’s as well as university’s mission. The main research areas cover the investigation and development of alkali-activated materials, investigation and modification of lime plasters and investigation of processes associated with water and wastewater treatment. Reasearch outputs are mainly scientific papers in highly recognized journals and active attendance in international scientific conferences, however, several applied research results (national patent, verified technology, approved methodology, utility model, functioning sample) were also produced in the past.
